Kayla Hougnon- Bold Color, Cozy Texture, and Tons of Heart

🧶 Meet the Maker: Kayla Hougnon of Rubies and Thread Co.

Bright colors, baby calves, and the joy of creating

We’re thrilled to introduce one of our newest makers to the Handmade in the Sandhills family — Kayla Hougnon, the heart and hands behind Rubies and Thread Co. Based in Nebraska and bursting with creativity, Kayla brings bold color, cozy texture, and tons of heart to every piece she makes.

🌟 A Creative Journey Rooted in Family

Kayla’s love for crafting began at the age of seven when she first picked up a crochet hook. “I learned from the women in my life who cared to show me these amazing crafts,” she shares. More recently, she’s added sewing to her skill set — bringing a fresh energy and curiosity to every new design she tries.

She officially launched Rubies and Thread Co. in 2023, inspired by her kids and her desire to stay home while still sharing something meaningful with her community. “I love being a stay-at-home mom,” Kayla says, “but I also love the creative outlet this gives me.”

🐮 A Favorite Creation: Baby Calf Stuffies

While Kayla makes a range of adorable crochet and sewn creations, one of her personal favorites are her baby calf stuffies — and it’s not hard to see why.

“Their big eyes get me every time,” she says. “I absolutely adore them.”

Each one is a sweet, huggable reminder of Nebraska farm life and childhood comfort, and they’re a huge hit with customers of all ages.

🎨 Bold, Bright, and Joyfully Original

Kayla’s favorite materials include chenille yarn for its softness and funky, colorful fabric that makes each piece pop with personality.

When it comes to her creative process, it’s all about making something her own. “I love to see a pattern and ask, How can I make this ME? What spin can I put on it to make it original?” Texture and color play a big role in her design approach — and you can feel the joy in every stitch.

💛 Sharing Joy, One Stuffy at a Time

Above all, Kayla hopes her creations spark happiness.

“I hope the things I make spread joy and smiles to people around me.”

Mission accomplished, Kayla. We’re so lucky to have your creativity, color, and heart as part of Handmade in the Sandhills.
